Q. Why is gender equity important in local government?
In 2009 21% of Mayors in Australia were women.
In 2008, across Australia women still accounted for less than 30% of councillors, only 20% of senior managers and only 5% of chief executives in local government.
Councils which don't reflect the diversity of their communities can't hope to serve their communities.
Councils have to compete for the best candidates. It goes without saying that they should be looking amongst the whole population, not only within the male half of it. Talent is evenly divided between the genders and women number more than half of the university educated persons in many countries.
Q. How can we share our stories with other councils?
Got something to share? Let us know about it!
As this website grows we will publish lots of resources, including case studies. In particular we will be looking for examples of collaboration, innovation and lessons learnt.
